The History of Laitala Tile Company

Laitala Tile Company was founded in 1957 by Hank & Betty Jane Laitala.  Working out of their home and garage they built the business and moved into the long time location at 119 North Broadway.  Fred Meurer joined Hank & Betty Jane as an installer in 1964, continuing a tradition of excellent customer service and skilled installation.

The Laitala’s retired in 1983 and sold the business to Fred Meurer. Fred owned and operated Laitala Tile for the next 24 years, involving his own family in the business. Corey, Jeff and Kris learned the business from the ground up; sales, merchandising, installation and customer service.  In July 2007, with retirement in sight, Fred sold Laitala Tile to daughter Kris.  Kris and her husband John Keefe purchased the building at 1601 3rd Avenue SE, Rochester and renovated.  Kris moved Laitala Tile to the present renovated site in Oct. 2007.  The new location offers warehouse space, a large sunny showroom, customer parking and an easy access location.

Kris expanded their product selection, carrying tile from Crossville, Ideal Tile, Dal-tile, American Olean, Florida Tile and Esquire Tile among many others.  Laitala also carries selections of natural and cultured stone, quarry tile and glass block.

Laitala Tile is open 6 days a week and welcomes homeowners, installers, contractors, builders, designers and do-it-yourselfers.  Professional installation is available for large commercial projects, new construction, remodels, tubs, showers, floors, fireplaces and backsplashes.  Kris offers design assistance and guidance backed with knowledge of installation methods and materials for the customer that wants to do the installation themselves.
